Beginnings

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.  Hebrews 13:2

Hello & Welcome to Grandma Cooks 365!

Today is our first official day and we're so glad you've stopped by!

If you found us before today, you've already been introduced to Grandma. If not, you can read her short biography alongside this post.  This blog is lovingly dedicated to her memory and her legacy of delicious cooking.

She was born on a small farm in Overton, Nebraska. Her mother, Kathryn (who is my own daughter's namesake) was a milliner (a hat-maker) in town and I remember as a little girl watching in amazement as she manipulated a piece of newspaper and placed it on my head...a unique and beautiful hat to pretend with. She was also a talented baker and Grandma lamented not writing down those delicious bread recipes (many of which were probably concocted from memory). She told me about the divine smells wafting through the farmhouse and that she wouldn't have traded her upbringing for anything. The love and loyalty their family shared was priceless.

Grandma has been gone now over ten years, and it's taken about that long (in the midst of raising my own children) to compile all her recipes because her collection was so massive. Some recipes were taken from the well-worn recipe collections of the various Garden Clubs and Guilds that Grandma belonged to. Some from tattered books covered with tell-tale drips from a mystery ingredient. Others were written out in long hand--either my Grandma's or some other dear soul, long since gone.  Thanks to technology, I was able to scan these, place them safely in software, then alphabetize, categorize, and preserve the cooking heritage that Grandma left us.

All these recipes were prepared by her at least once and all of us family members were her favorite "test" subjects. Some of her dishes we loved and begged for over and over again. Others were not well-loved, but never awful...just not appealing to our taste buds. You may love them and we welcome your comments if you try them!

We want you to know right up front that this is not a blog that provides pictures of all the ingredients or the entire cooking process (there are so many other wonderful blogs and websites out there that provide that "teachable" cooking experience!) but we will provide a few helpful tips and tricks. There might be some family history behind a particular recipe that we'll share too. We hope you stop in often and have fun trying these recipes out for yourself.

Feel free to drop us a line any time. We'd love to hear from you...you might even have your own recipe to share and Grandma would have loved that!
